Does the Fediverse have the capacity for private groups?

Asking because I'm in some Facebook groups for therapists (resource sharing, general support, not private client info!) and many are looking to ditch Meta finally but are struggling to find alternatives.

Basically needs to be a closed community that can be moderated.

@dramypsyd A closed community is by definition not "federated". There are tons of ways to make a closed communication platform that is moderated, but none of them really have anything to do with federation, because the whole purpose of federation is to be open, not closed. That is not to say that certain software that can be used for federating cannot be used in a closed fashion, but this is probably beyond the capabilities of casual , non-technical users.

@gcvsa @dramypsyd You could have ways to do both on the same plaform though. To form closed communities and to post publicly and have those public posts spread across a network.

@marymessall @dramypsyd Yes, you can; however, I would point out that the vast majority of "social media" applications and platforms do not offer sufficient privacy and security to do both.

Ironically, Facebook is one of the best, if not the best, at this. If you block someone on Facebook, they can't even see that you have an account unless your account is externally linked by third-parties.

The point of a closed group is that no one should be able to read it, or ideally even know it exists.

...unless they're invited by one of the members.
